Project Description: During the peaks of the COVID pandemic, everyone was doing their best to isolate and stay at home, but there was one place where everyone had to go out of necessity, the grocery store. A shopping cart handle will be touched repeatedly throughout the day and inevitably becomes a commonly contacted surface. To reduce the spread of pathogens in grocery stores, the UV-C Shopping Cart Handle Sanitization System was created. Instead of relying on workers and sanitization wipes, this automated system will guarantee a 99.9% disinfection rate in 35 seconds. MATLAB was utilized to optimize UV-C LEDs and Solidworks for FEA structural analysis of the system.
